The elliptical leaves are of dark purple color that darken until they become burgundy purple with the advancing of the season, reaching brown in autumn. has a light grey smooth bark. prefers fresh and humid environments, typical of mountainous and hilly regions, and exposure to half shade/full sun. grows easily in deep, rich, humid and well drained soils. does not tolerate wet and poorly draining soils.
